Wow! This is a great point, and it's not one that we consider a lot here on Imamother.

A while ago there was a thread in which Amother asked about spending money on her DH's wardrobe: he'd been counseled by his boss that he needed to present a more upscale image. I don't think there was the slightest disagreement among posters that this was a necessary expense.

It's such a balancing act, and post-WWII Jewish affluence is new enough that we don't really have a lot of good role models.

We're in Israel and also downplay. But astute people notice things. One of our children said her friend said that our family must have money because nothing in the house is broken or ripped or stained, even if it's plain.
