Is it rude to ask someone to pick their own gift? What if you have very different taste than the recipient?

I don't think its rude but I also don't like to be asked. There are other ways of finding out what to get other than just asking straight out.

"Pick your own gift" would work if you had a catalog with an array of gifts that you showed them and asked them to choose. Otherwise, "Pick your own gift" sounds like "I cannot be bothered looking for something, so do it yourself." I would rather be asked "what would you like?" which IMO sounds like "I want to get you something that will appeal to you." See the difference?
