Has anyone made a beef stew for shabbos lunch? I can't make cholent bc my husband can't have barley so I'm looking for other options that would still be good shabbos day. TIA!

I haven't made beef stew, but we often make chili as chulent. Is barley the only food you need to avoid?

Pretty much. It has to be gluten free

You can substitute brown rice instead of barley and it comes out delicious. If you normally do one cup of barley so do one cup of rice.
We've done beef stew before but I don't have exact recipe so nothing to share on that end.

Ah, got it. I'll stick with my chili recommendation, then. You can pair it with rice, or just throw in corn as a grain.

We always have gluten free cholent. I use white short grain rice and it comes out great.

We often make a stew like cholent with just potatoes, sweet potatoes and meat. Usually flanken. Or just a regular cholent with brown rice instead of barley.

When I have a nursing baby my chulent is stew and potatoes only. I sautee onion garlic. Add stew. We like dark chicken stew best even over meat. Sautee it for a few hrs in crockpot. Add bar b q sauce. Add potatoes salt and a little water. Enjoy it. If u c it gets too dry fri night then add a little chicken soup.

I've done it plenty of times. Same recipe I'd make just on the stove top, but I add water to mostly cover it and stick it on low. It always comes out nicely. Make sure to add extra seasoning or use stock instead of water, because the water dilutes the herbs and spices in this method.

But short grain brown rice, or short grain white rice (aka sushi rice) has a similar consistency to barley and works wonderfully as a sub.
