Is it because it's exotic and cute? Or easy portion control? Or because it's take-out or at a restaurant?
It's on the daily lunch menu at Stern College.
To me, it's cold and unsatisfying. Definitely not comfort food. But I seem to be in the minority.

I Cudnt look at it until I was pregnant with my first and since then I love it! nit the raw fish type though.But with veggies or cooked salmon tempura...I'll eat that any time! no idea why though. it's just good and refreshing and not heavy. I can't say it fills me up for a full meal but great for a quick fix when I get home from work before I begin preparing supper.

Agreed! Give me some hot soup or stew or chicken anytime! Sushi is, as you said, cold and unsatisfying.

If I just want a snack I'd rather have fruit or something.

I remember in college, though, sushi was my go-to snack while studying.

I really enjoy hand rolls and sashimi! I don't like the cooked sushi though at all, and find it much less pleasing to the palette. Interestingly enough, much of the dishes that are considered to be the best representation of sushi are not kosher and what's available in kosher is quite limited and bland when compared to the non kosher sushis...

I can't stand sushi. I feel so unsophisticated...

I'm not a picky eater and I love lots of interesting ethnic foods, but I just don't get the appeal of sushi.

Same here. I get the aesthetic appeal and its fun to make but the taste and mouth feel 'leave me cold'.

I love sushi and sashimi. They taste good, are healthy and aren't loaded with empty calories.
I don't like sushi tempura.
Sushi doesn't leave me feeling cold but I'm not really that much of a soup lover, and I don't necessarily prefer hot foods. Sushi isn't really a comfort food. It's more of a light, tasty meal to me.

I love love love sushi. But, not all sushi is created equal. Most sushi in the usa is just okay.

Sushi made fresh in Japan is far surperior in my opinion. Many years before I started keeping kosher I had real sushi in Japan and it was amazing. Only one place has been close in comparison in my opinion in the usa. Now, the kosher sushi I've had since keeping kosher is fine, but the stuff in Japan is just so much better.

I haven't the faintest idea. Like many things Japanese, sushi seems to hold content subordinate and presentation all-important. To me it has no taste and is an excuse for the dipping sauce. It does seem nicely portable, though, so I can see its appeal as a brown-bag lunch item. But of course Americans don't brown-bag sushi from home, so the "why" remains a mystery. But to each his or her own--those who don't mind shelling out $5-6 for half a cup of cold rice with some slivers of vegetables and fish are welcome to it. In fact, I admire the Japanese for coming up with such a clever way of taking next to nothing and making it look like something.

Why does anything become a craze?


I love sushi.... I'll eat the whole platter at a Simcha if u don't stop me Wink
Though am I the only one who sometimes feels tired or dizzy after sushi?? (Not a whole platter lol, just a few pieces will do it.)

It is ok. You are allowed to have your own preferences and not follow the crowd. That is much more sophisticated than going along with what "everyone else" is doing. Remember the Emperor's New Clothes?

I'm a huge sushi/sashimi fan, if it's made well, with very fresh and inventive ingredients. The boring sushi sold in many places doesn't cut it.

It's light, full of protein, aesthetic, healthy.

I do not like cooked sushi or anything fried.

Oh and I love wasabi.

But if you don't like it, don't eat it.

And if you do eat it make sure it's from a reputable place that knows how to prepare it properly and under sanitary conditions. Also, if you're pregnant you should be extra cautious about consuming sushi.

Well, someone could have started a thread "Why is pizza so popular?".
IMHO the main reason is that's what general (non-Jewish) population has been
consuming--since 1980s? 90s?--and we caught on the wave as well.

It probably started from the West Coast where there're larger presence
of Japanese Americans. It coincided with low-fat diet popularity, and
availability (and better distribution system) for high-quality raw fish.

As for Jews, I know quite a number of people who would eat out sushi or sashimi
in non-kosher restos, similar to people eating out salad. They find it less problematic
in terms of kashrut (correctly or incorrectly). To be honest, I don't find sushi to be
particularly healthy--esp soy sauce is loaded with sodium.

It is a personal taste. Even in Japan, it is not an every-day snack but
rather special occasion foods until 1980s with the conveyer belt sushi places
were invented.

As for relative comp between kosher and non-kosher sushi, I had a pleasure of
having one at Chabad in Tokyo prepared by a professional sushi chef, and it was
fantastic. It boils down to the quality of fish and how you prepare rice.
I don't believe in sushi in the chilled section--sushi rice should be room temp, not
chilled, which of course indicate it's a kind of food meant to be prepared and
consumed without delay, as you can't because fish should be kept chilled.

I love the flavor of good quality sushi. I love the textures of all sushi. I don't like the flavor of supermarket sushi.
