Does anyone have any suggestions for some thought provoking songs (can be folk rock, can be any other genre) that I can use for an activity in a college class? I prefer to keep things G-rated, but I'm looking for songs that change your perspective.
The other song I'm using so far is Flowers Are Red.
I'd love to get songs from other genres......... This activity is not about Harry Chapin!

Lol. I read your title and was going to post "anything by Harry Chapin", but then I read your last line.

ETA maybe something by Simon and Garfunkel or Paul Simon, or if you're looking for Jewish something from Abie Rotenberg's Journeys

I grew up loving songs like these!

Where have all the flowers gone

Sound of Silence

The strangest dream

We Shall Overcome (share story of use in civil rights protests)

You've got to be carefully taught (South Pacific)

Atheists' Convention in LA

Is that enough? I can give you lots more, if you want to share more about the lesson.

Part of an ongoing class on narrative therapy approaches. We're going to talk about how our minds fill in the unspoken 'backstory' narrative of the song - we have a picture in our minds of the father and son in Cats In The Cradle, for example. How does the melody enhance/detract from the narrative aspect of the song? Can you continue the story?

That is going to segue into - look how our continuations of the story are different - there's how our life histories influence our understanding of others.

I hate heavy metal, but The Unforgiven, by Metallica is definitely worth hearing. Not so much for the music, but for the lyrics mostly (although the chorus is quite pleasant to listen to.)

Lyrics: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics......html

I know that they made updated versions of the song with new lyrics, but I never heard them so I don't know if they're as good as the original.

Blackbird - The Beatles
Everybody's Talking - Harry Neilsen (though AIU the song is from an x rated movie)
Peter Paul and Mary songs - e.g. Lemon Tree and another one that's tickling my brain
I've Got a Name - Jim Croce (there are some others too but I really have to peel potatoes and go to sleep)

Actually, I don't know how thought provoking they are but they're pretty songs, with real words, and not love songs.

And I had to come down between potatoes 2 and 3 to add, check out Simon and Garfinkel.
OK, I have to stop thinking about this now. (At least none of the songs I'll suggest is likely to be in Dave Barry's Book of Really Bad Songs Tongue Out )

Just as an aside, I recently learned that cats in the cradle was actually a letter/poem to Harry Chapin from his wife, she sent it to him when he was out of town as he often was. Such a great lesson, he took it to heart and made a song out of it.

100 years, from five for fighting. (am not a pop music fan, but there's strong narrative there)
