Does anyone have an English speaking friend with a severe special needs child in Israel? Our son needs intense PT by skilled and knowledgeable PT's daily, and some good doctors, and a mainstream yeshiva. No idea where to start

Are you on facebook? There is a group called special needs mamas in israel. The ladies there are very helpful.

The NBN website? This site is a pretty good place, too, I imagine.

Beyond PT, what specifically do you need? There are lots of different kinds of special needs. Are you in any FB groups? How old is the child?

Also, what on earth is a mainstream yeshiva? And how does that fit with severe special needs?

I'm not on FB, but I'll talk to DH about joining for that group. It seems worthwhile.

Our son is in a regular yeshiva class now. He walks with braces and a walker but he is cognitively normal, bright, happy. I wrote 'severe' just to distinguish him from someone who occasionally gets speech or something, but I'm sorry I used the word, it wasn't very accurate b'h.

Please Gd, I was hoping to hear, "Call this organization, they do EVERYTHING for you to make it possible to make aliya with a special needs child!"

He needs PT and an RN to shadow him at school. Medically we could use a few good specialists, but if we had the PT regimen in place and knew he could get his shadow, that's priority.

We spoke to an NBN guy. We can pay like $150 an hour for a social worker to help us. No help there.

I've heard from multiple people here that the SN services in israel far surpass those in america. I don't know from personal experience but that's what I've heard.

Chush is a special ed school in Brooklyn. They deal in learning dissabilties, NOT physical issues. I think its for ages 5 and up. 'Yeshiva Livnar Hasapir' https://www.ou.org/school/VqP7.....boys/

They have a girls division too.

it probably depends on what the special needs are.

Unless you have good Hebrew, I would think twice. There are a lot of services offered here for special needs kids but getting them is another story. It's "normal" to wait for up to 6-8 months to be seen by a specialist or for OT or PT benefits to kick in. I think once you are in the system, it gets easier, but still what you get on paper and what actually happens may not be the same. You basically have to fight to get services, which is hard to do if you are non fluent in Hebrew..

In Ramat Bet Shemesh, there is an organization named Ezras Achim. The guy in charge, an Israeli Chassid, does a lot of things for special needs kids. Maybe he will have some ideas. PM me and I will try to look up his name and phone number. The other idea is calling Rebbetzin Orlowick's organization...maybe, she will have some ideas. She is an American who runs an organization to help English speakers in regards to chinuch habanim. Again, pm me if you need more info. Knowing where you are going to live might help us so that you can tell schools, etc. names of rabbanim that you are close to, etc. Even getting into a yeshiva k'tana is no small feat without any issues.

wow. it's extremely overwhelming...

I think it's better if we go there for summers. not that we could afford it, but pretending we can, maybe we can figure things out that way...

I have a nine year old son who is handicapped, sick and mentally [crazy]. I have found the system here to be amazing. He started off in a school for handicapped kids because he has CP - it's called Meshi. Very warm and loving with top of the line therapists and equipment. He is now in Siach Sod since the retardation is a bigger problem than the CP. Also, a wonderful school. When my son was in Meshi, there was a boy with CP who ended up moving on to a regular cheder with a shadow - and I assume therapy after school. I wonder if Nefesh bnefesh could help you. Also, I have met several people who have moved here from the US because EY was better for their child than the US.
