There is a mohel in Monsey who we'd like to use - we just want to make sure that medically he's good/recommended. We know him, so we're not concerned about any other aspect. Any ideas how I could discretely check into him?

Ask him what practices he uses? How regularly he visits a doctor, swabs, and what he washes his mouth out with. Ask him if he checks out all hand sores with a physician as well, and if whoever will dress or undress the baby does as well as anyone else who may come in contact with the baby's naked skin... It's pretty standard to ask about these practices.

I feel uncomfortable doing this since he is a personal friend - I don't want to offend him if we decide not to use him based on his answers. That's why I'd prefer to ask a 3rd party.

I found the best person to ask was my kids pediatrician ( if this is your first you can call the practice before hand and speak to the doctor). There was someone in town I wanted to use and my kids doctor said he never saw any complications from him and uses this mohel for his own kids. That was all I needed to hear to make me comfortable.
