Question for OT's who work in public schools grades 1-5. How do you deal with the fact that the core curriculum requires kindergardeners to do many things they are not developmentally ready for (ie. write full sentences, legibly, without mastering pre-writing skills)? How do you deal with all the students who are placed on your OT caseload because they are "failing" when it is usually the core curriculum to blame??? (I'm referring to typically developing kids, no major diagnoses). It is so hard for me to hold back my opinion that the core curriculum is worthless garbage during iep meetings.

1. If applicable, educate pre k teachers on developing pre writing skills. Otherwise, educate k teachers on how to develop these skills early in the year. That's the best you can do within the system.
2. Come to IEP meetings with evidence to support norms for skill acquisition in typically developing children. They can't argue with studies.
