I know attorneys who wear a toupe in court. This probably goes back several decades, and they felt that appearing openly Jewish might be detrimental to their clients.
I think most young professionals today have more Jewish pride and expect to get ahead in spite of being open about it. And perhaps 50 years ago there were still quotas etc. in many places. Today, in the US at least, most people are not afraid to look Jewish.
But in a place of danger, I would totally understand it. Although I would have more trouble understanding if they don't do everything possible to emigrate.
