Harris Huberman, developmental pediatrician at Downstate
(would greatly like to hear about him because they accept most insurance there)

Yitzchak Frank, developmental neurologist at Mount Sinai
(does not seem to accept our insurance but does take others, may be worth switching if it's worth it and I can't find someone good on our insurance)

I am not even sure whether the difference between pediatrician developmental/behavioral specialist or neurologist developmental specialist is important. It is for a child with social/emotional/behavior/sensory difficulties who may or may not have autism/PDD/ADHD/LD/something/nothing/whatever.

Please share your experiences with these doctors and/or others in this field if you know of any (preferably who take insurance).

I have not heard of either.
dd is on the spectrum, have been to some specialist. More than looking for a diagnosis, I was looking for help in understanding her strengths and weaknesses better, and what methods we should use to help her.
diagnosis didnt help me much, besides for getting her more services.
I have seen
Dr Canary at Maimonodies. Neuro
Dr Rami Grossman, Long Island. Neuro
How old is your child? I may have another idea for you.

Dr Canary. But I had to wait 7 months for an appointment.
If the Dr.s you mentioned above take your insurance, it is worth a try.
I went to another Neuro in Methodist, can't remember her name now, but that was zero help.
You just got to try

Why don't you ask ECHO or Refuah Resources for a referral? They might be able to better help you.

I have gone to Dr. Huberman with my child and I know a few ladies who have taken their kids there- some have taken a few and have been happy.

Thanks. Can you tell me what you used him for or what his specialties are? I'm not sure I really understand the whole idea... what does an evaluation involve? Do they also tell you what to do about the problem once they identify it? Huberman is a pediatrician, not a neurologist or psychoeducational whatever, is he able to diagnose if a child has learning disabilities or something like that causing the behavior problems (like if not listening = poor processing)

he is a developmental pediatrician- he doesn't deal with strep throat or ear infections, he specializes in child development. I took my very delayed kid there, we had a 1-2 hour interview/observation where he took medical and developmental history, how the kid is on a regular day, what concerns we have. He observed the child. A social worker played with the kid/tried to engage and he observed. We then came back another time for some standardized tests. My kid was pretty straight forward. My friend has gone back a few times with her kid on the spectrum, now they are helping her with school placement.

Thank you for sharing, BNM. I will try calling his office tomorrow to ask about insurance and appointments...

Anyone know about Yitzchak Frank? From a google search I thought maybe he'd be a good choice because he seems to specialize in learning disabilities alongside other developmental things, and that is something I'm concerned about. But so far I've had no luck reaching his office, even the neurology clinic he's affiliated with their soonest half-hour (???) slot is in the summer, and I'm not sure yet whether he takes insurance for what we want since the clinic he works with that does take our insurance doesn't seem to offer what I'm looking for (though he was specifically recommended for this by my pediatrician who said he has sent other patients there succesfully, so I know he does do evaluations - just I guess not in a half hour at a hospital clinic!)
