You can play with the barbecue sauce.
for every cup of (thick) barbecue sauce, add 1/3 cup honey. 1/2 Tbsp ground mustard, 3/4 tsp ground ginger. you can add diced onions and pineapple to that if you'd like
Or for every cup of bbq sauce you can add a Tbsp of Italian seasoning. you can add sliced onion, sliced mushroom and chopped tomatoes if you'd like.
You can do an orange flavored bbq sauce... Etc.

Coat ribs (the recipe calls for 2-1/2 pounds of boneless short ribs, but I like to use a mix of boned and boneless) with mix of flour, salt and pepper, and brown in oil. Remove ribs from pan, and place in slow cooker.
Add 1 cup chopped onion, 1 cup beef broth, 3/4 cup red wine vinegar, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup chili sauce, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 2 tablespoons minced garlic (I use more) and 1 teaspoon chili powder to same pan. Bring to boil, then pour over ribs. cover and cook on low 8 hours.
