It sounds ok to me. Sounds like he was impressed by your cheerfulness (which is very important, yes for religious people) - and he wanted to let you know that. It is indeed, a remarkable quality when someone carries themselves with a smile, especially when they are helping others.
However I don't think you are crazy. I think you are just very correct. Which is good too. x
