What do I need to know about self cleaning an oven? embarrassed
Never done it before (no judgment please) and don't regularly clean our oven by hand either embarrassed
We've just never had a spill or anything close to a spill or leak in there so I never realized it was necessary. I want to self clean it but don't know what to do. Clean inside first? Is that absolutely necessary? Or just run the self clean cycle and it should be fine?

Take out the racks and run the self clean cycle on high When you open up oven it may have a white ash it. Just wipe that out with a clean wet paper towel.

Rofl why take out the racks? Don't they get kashered as well during self-cleaning cycle?

No.

I also put the grates from the stovetop in the oven to clean them.

The door may still need some work after the self-clean cycle.

Same as above. Any food or food residue inside the oven will turn into ashes.

PSA: If you have pet birds, please move them to a well-ventilated area far from the oven.

Do you really keep your racks in the oven during self clean?
I know someone who did that and her glass to the oven became all discolored and it has been this way ever since.

In my old oven I used to put the racks and burners in. My new oven racks are much thinner and the oven manual said that it may ruin the rack and warp them. I bought new racks and new burners for my oven just for pesach.
