What kind of riding toy can I get for my tall 7-year-old son? (He already has a kick scooter, uses it occasionally.)
I'm asking because he has some weird meshugasim/phobias/social issues. He refuses to learn how to ride a bike because (a) he lacks the patience necessary to get through the learning process (b) he is already embarrassed that he doesn't know how and he doesn't want to be seen learning (c) we are adamant that our children wear bicycle helmets and he refuses, both because of sensory issues and because he is exceedingly self-conscious.
Yet he yearns to climb onto something and GO! He's still riding his noisy big wheel tricycle... is there anything out there which is appropriate for his age and size, and yet low enough to the ground that it would be safe to ride without a helmet?

If your sidewalk is not completely flat (even a slight incline is good), how about a Plasma Car?

We actually thought about that and even took him to someone in the neighborhood who has one so he can try it. But he found it to be slow and frustrating. My son has alot of energy and very little patience - he wants to GO!

I would LOVE for him to learn roller blading. I think it would be great for his coordination. But it requires a helmet...

Not without a helmet!

Would you go for a motorized car of some sort or is that not your thing?

My son would love that. But in my neighborhood that would be unsafe, in addition my son would get no exercise with that.

Anything that he would be able to ride fast would need a helmet.
Maybe take him to a park out of the area and try to teach him to ride a bike.

Take him to a bike store too try on helmets. There may be one that's acceptable to him.
Regularly take him to a distant park to learn to ride where his friends won't see him.

Does he have an OT therapist for his sensory issues? Often they can help with getting him used to things, teaching him how to ride at his own pace. He can be taught out of the neighborhood.

There are also professionals for hire who teach this skill of bike riding.

Plasma car was the only riding toy I could think of.

Ra_mom, I like those ideas. I'm going to check them out. Thank you!
