I recall the video we posted on imamother years ago of the french charedi man who slapped his daughter at the kotel. We were unanimously horrified. It wasn't the same situation at all, but I'm still reminded of it because we were all so clear that slapping on the face was abuse.
Now, in this case, it's a cultural thing? In some charedi chedarim, it's culturally acceptable for rebbes to smack the boys. Is that ok with you? |
This is in response to the bolded. No, but I feel that since this is "my" culture, I have the right to comment. If that man said "well, in our culture, it's OK to hit, "choshech shivto Sonei Bno" I have all the sources at my fingertips to refute that (Rav Shlomo Wolbe said....Rav Ahron Leib Steinman said....) etc. It's my culture, so I can offer an opinion, it's not imperialist of me to do so.
To be clear, I am not ok with hitting kids! But I do think that this mother was acting out a cultural script and also acting out of pretty serious fear.
