If someone got engaged then it was broken, does the shadchan need to be paid shadchanus? When do people usually pay the shadchan, at the wedding? If they paid before, does the shadchan need to pay it back?

MOST people pay shadchan at vort. As far as I know, if the engagement is broken, the money is not returned.

I know two people who had broken engagements, and both times the shadchan returned the money. (two different shadchanim).

Afaik, Batei Din hold that unless the Shadchan clearly lied, and this led to the Shidduch falling apart, they did their work and money doesn't have to be returned.

My parents were told to pay the shadchan at the wedding. I guess if an engagement gets broken off then they would ask a shayla. If a shadchan had already been paid, then I would guess the shadchan would ask a shayla.
