Please help me understand why coloring nails sharp colors is considered pretty. I don't judge anyone who does so, it's not a tznius thing for me, I am simply fashion challenged. Is it something I will never understand because you either get it or you don't, or can someone help me figure it out?

I love clean, polished, and neat. French, or polished light pink, I can understand. Why is red considered attractive? Why are dark unnatural colors pretty when to my eyes it's just strange?

Because there are many different tastes in the world. In Asian dark blue is a very picked up nail color, but I personally do not go for it. Sometimes people choose colors that are "fun" rather than what they consider to be beautiful. Red nails are beautiful, but maybe it is a foreign concept to you so it looks bizarre in your eyes?

It's not foreign to me, I have friends and relatives wearing all colors on the rainbow. I didn't grow up with it, though, so maybe that's why.

I was just thinking in terms of the point of makeup. I wouldn't use green blush on my cheeks, but green nails are pretty? Why?

Choosing fun colors as opposed to making it about beauty makes sense.

I guess intellectualizing fashion is a futile attempt at squaring the circle.

I see it more comparable to, say, a pretty color shirt, or a funky ring. blush is on your face, and meant to look natural. you wouldnt wear your statement necklace as a nosering.

Compare it more to eye makeup than to blush. Some people prefer more conservative while others don't.

Is it difficult to understand that different people have different tastes for different styles? This applies to literally everything in life.

Color nails are fashionable nowadays. Even the designer makeup brands are doing funky colors like blue or yellow.
Fashionable is not necessarily synonymous of universally pretty.

Thank you everyone who replied, your answers really make sense.

I rarely adopt new fashions, unless I happen to like the way that style /color looks on me.

I guess this trend is not for me. Smile

Wear what makes you happy. If you are happy, that's the prettiest accessory of all! Very Happy

Heck, I love bright nail polish, but I will never understand how anyone could eat chopped liver. Puke Live and let live, right?

It's not about judging "how in the world", I was asking why do people do it. I got some pretty great answers, and I love your take on it, too...

I'm with you on the chopped liver...

Now, what do you think of nose rings?

Well, if a nose ring was good enough for Rivka Imenu…

But seriously, I know several women who totally rock a small stud or very thin hoop on the side of the nose, and they look adorable. I've tried to hold up a small earring or bead to my face, and it just doesn't work for me. I think on me, it makes my face look "cluttered", maybe because I wear glasses. Nerd

I got several tattoos before I became observant, and there's still a big part of me that would love to get more ink. Sadly, those days are long gone. I promise I won't get them to serve idols or worship the dead! Honest!

I tried a faux nose ring. The reflection in my eyeglasses made me crazy. Then it fell off into my tater tots and I think I swallowed it.

I'm glad you tried the fake one before piercing your nose and getting the annoying reflection thing more permanently... LOL

Because everyone has a different skin tone. I have pale skin and pastels don't look so good on me, but bright and dark colors look fantastic. For someone with tan, bright greens and blues look great. Of course there are neutrals for every skin tone, but there are brights that match skin tone too.

OP, I get what you are saying. I am not a nail polish person myself.

Blush gives you a youthful glow by making your cheeks slightly rosier than they already are. Red- or pink-hued lipstick enhances the appearance of your naturally reddish--pinkish lips. They take your natural features and give them more oomph.

In contrast, blue (or even red) fingernails do not take your naturally blue (or red) fingernails and give them more oomph; you do not have naturally blue or red fingernails to emphasize.

It's a different category of cosmetic.

Think of it more as a way for some women to use their own fingernails as a colored ornament or accessory.

Blue, yellow, green, white and black nail polish - basically anything not in the pink/red family all look bizarre to me. Bright red just seems very loud and flashy but not strange.
I think it's a generational thing.
