I am so freaked out. I moved a little while ago and I am not used to the infestation of ticks like it is here. I actually cant believe I found a tick on my daughter this morning and my son motzei shabos. on son it was just crawling on his yarmulka but dd it was on her scalp/hair. so I am officially getting educated. I am so nervous thinking my older dd has jra and uveitis and we never really set it straight that she has lyme disease. we dont remember her getting a bite. so I was just thinking this morning that its probably from that. cause noone in my family has jra and uveitis. but she suffered and is suffering so much. it gives me so much pain and gives me a panicky feeling. now I am happy is found it and took it off. but give more info lakewooders. do you find them easily here? or just my area? I am near belz. what were your experiences on this? what have your doctors told you to do? I hear the blood test takes a few weeks to get results! wow. I didnt speak with my doc yet, just want to hear what you do and what are your experiences.

I've dealt with it. You should call speak to the doctor now. If you treat it sooner rather then later, the treatment will be more effective.

Not all tic bites lead to lyme disease, but you should speak to the doctor and follow his instructions if you should test. For Lyme's disease, they gave my kids 30 days of low dose antibiotics.

None of my kids ever got a tick bite in Lakewood to the best of my knowledge (but DD got two on school Shabbos in Camp Agudah!) but I've heard it's a big issue in some of the newly built areas, as they are right at the edge of woods, and also are still left over from just-cut-down areas....I once traveled into NY with a friend who was living in a new-construction house, and she told me her boys play in the woods out back all day, and she picks ticks off of them every night, and has seen them crawling on her nice, new floors.

No need to panic, but if your child gets a tick bite you keep an eye on them, mark the day on your calendar so that if they develop any suspicious symptoms you can tell the doc the date of their bite, and they can be treated accordingly (so said the school nurse to DD at school Shabbos.)

I don't live near the new developments and my kids have gotten ticks and my neighbors told me recently that they have gotten a few this year. b'h no lyme disease has resulted.
Check during bath time. Remove and save and circle date on calendar. If a large rash appears in the area or child has fever within the next few weeks be sure to ask your pediatrician.

It can't hurt to ask your pediatrician about it now just to be sure.

My kids get ticks all the time in the summer, I've had a few times too. Dr Shanik says is very important to FLUSH the tick, there's no other way to kill it. Mark it on your calendar and if there are any symptoms within 30 days they will treat it. Symptoms can include a rash or bulls eye, or it can be fever or just not feeling well.

The ones in the hair are generally larger, those are dog ticks and they do not carry lyme disease. (according to Dr Shanik)

Supposedly this is a great tick remover http://www.amazon.com/Ticked-O.....over. I haven't tried it, but I know someone who swears by it. I just use a tweezers and pull it out from the back.

The little teeny ones are the deer tick before they have a chance to feed on the blood which makes them grow. I've only ever seen one type in the hair, but once it's been there awhile, it gets very large and bloated so it looks different. It's much harder to find dog ticks in hair, which is why they are very often already bloated when we find them.

It's possible your area has different ticks than mine, I have no idea. I don't live near the new belz neighborhood.

Not just fever, any kind of cold or flu symptoms or unusual rash. Definitely if you see a bulls eye you need to take the child in. My dd had a bulls eye, even though we had never seen the tick. Dr Shanik will medicate for any strange symptoms within 30 days of a tick bite, even though it can be a regular virus, he won't take a chance.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY !!!

We are INFESTED with ticks here. Take your DS to Dr. Shanik or Cohen - they see it so often, they have more experience with Lyme than many specialists!

I've lived here all my life and suffered terribly from Lyme's last year without even knowing I'd been bitten!!!

IT CAN BE LIFE THREATENING - pm me if you need to. My mother still takes medication every day because her Lyme's affected her heart....

Can you please describe what you saw on her scalp/hair? I was in Monsey for the weekend (there are deers in the area) and I noticed on my toddler a black spot or two on his scalp which I soon forgot about but now I'm thinking if it can be a tick?

okay this is what I have learned so far. they are brown. the really small ones can be the size of poppy seeds. (you can google that) the bigger ones look like ugly bugs. and when you see them they are inbedded with their mouth and rest of body is moving. so when you seee it you think you can blow it off but no you need a tweezer to pull it off. if part of it stays in body tell that to doctor. not all ticks have lime disease. they like to go in warm parts of body. in/out of ear, on the scalp, at hairline, behind knees, under arms, waist, belly button, crotch area. and anywhere else on the body. get to know your body and if you see a target like symbol of bite then report it. /bulls eye look. the small ones feel like a scab on the body so you know its a tick. if you try to scratch it it wont come off thats a tick. keep the tick and take to doctor and write when you saw it.

I have question. I dont remember getting any bites, but I have terrible migraines and at that point I also get chills. so I had migraines last week like monday, and tuesday. then friday I had terrible muscle pains. I had to take motrin to relieve my pain. can this be lyme disease? how long does it take till it goes so far? do adults also get fever? I am so nervous bec my place is infested with ticks. I cant just go to the doctor and tell her I had muscle aches.

There are a lot of ticks in my neighborhood too, not new construction. They're mostly dog ticks, which don't carry Lyme, but we occasionally get deer ticks too. You don't need to save the ticks anymore as the state no longer tests them. The only reason you would need to save it would be if you wanted to identify what kind of tick it is, which you can easily do on the internet. My kids have had ticks and so have DH and I.

Use a tweezer, grasp the tick by its head, and firmly pull it out. You need to make sure that the head comes out, if you pull it by the body the head will stay in and continue potentially infecting you. Mark the date of the bite and if you start to have symptoms within 30 days, get checked out.

If you check your kids and yourself every night there is virtually no risk of Lyme, according to my pediatrician. As long as it hasn't been on the skin for more than 48 hours, the chance of Lyme disease is very slim, so make sure you check thoroughly every night and there shouldn't be any problems.

Question to those whose children got the bullseye rash:
We don't live in Lakewood, but visited for Pesach. My son had 2 bullseye rashes last week. Our local doctor said that it's not from a tick bite but a reaction to a regular insect bite. (Ticks aren't common where we live and doctors aren't so familiar). The doctor refused to treat it.
Can you please give me some more information about what symptoms your child had? Did the bullseye rash grow? How long after the bite did the bullseye appear? My son did not have fever, but did have sever diarrhea that week. Should I be concerned?
Thanks!
