I don't know about halacha - ask your Rav - but the mentchlich thing to do if your child ruins or damages something is to offer to pay to fix/replace it.

It could be a question of circumstances.

Once, one of my brothers put his hands out in front of his face in self-defense - the other boy was trying to punch him in the face. By doing this, he knocked the other boy's glasses off and they broke.

Yes - the mother tried to demand payment for the glasses - and no, my parents did not pay.

Halacha does not require you to pay. Decency does.

There are, however, amothers here who think otherwise.

To OP, I am a sibling of a rabbi, therefore, by association, I advise you to compensate the family for the ruined garb. Thank you, and have a toradika day!

it depends, if the other kid was hurting him and this was his self defense I don't think I would pay.

That's what small claims court is for Twisted Evil

OP, I always try to err on the side of doing my part (in this case paying). However, was the shirt particularly valuable? Are you really strapped for cash? Are they? Did they ask you to pay?

If my kids were playing with someone and a kid ripped their shirt, I would say "Don't worry about it." B"H I can afford to replace a shirt and I don't think it's worth the negative relationship for something so small.

Your neighbor cares about it. She told you that according to halacha you don't have to pay, but that doesn't mean she doesn't want you to replace it. I would ask her if she would rather money to replace it or if you should buy the replacement shirt (assuming you can buy it again).

We should set up a scholarship fund for that.

While we're waiting for the first graduate, these links may be relevant
