I used to have so many ideas. For some reason my brain is blank now.
I'll see what I can pull up, some of these may be for younger kids.

Allaire State Park (bike paths, hike paths, old village, park, picnic, train ride)
Popcorn zoo
Peach Picking (battle view orchard)
Hallocks U Pick
Blueberry picking (we stopped because we have had infestation and stopped eating fresh blueberries - NJ is prime picking)
Beach after 5:00. If you want to start earlier take Cedar bridge to mantoloking and you can park before the bridge and walk along the bridge and see people crabbing, fishing, boating, jet skiing.
Point Pleasant has fireworks thursday nights: http://jenkinsons.com/events/f.....dark/
http://www.rentmeatrossis.com/ - bike rental on the beach. Might not be able to go with older boys.
You can also rent pontoons for the day near the ocean, I think there may also be sail boat rides and\or kayaking\canoying near toms rivers. Try googling for options. Groupon just had a coupon for this - but it could be you needed boating experience.
Longstreet farm\Holmdel park, fantastic park on the top level, very small farm, sometimes have demonstrations and milkings. Biking paths and picnic area.
Monmouth county fair (when it is around, or other smaller fairs, that one is priced well0
Thompson Park (nice park - has drop in ceramic every so often - check schedule).

Are you up to driving:
Fort Delaware is fantastic. Park with old forts, ferry that takes you to a large fort where they re-inact life on the fort.
Trenton - planetarium (chep, not so exciting), tour the state house.
Howell Living History Farm (we once drove out there and it rained so we didn't actually see what was there).
DiggerLand
Staten Island Ferry - either to walk along the water in NY and then return - or go to Governors island - it is a full day adventure.
Camden Aquarium.
Philadelphia zoo. There is also a very nice park next to the zoo.

Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook - its not a full day - but if you are driving by it is worth to stop. We once visited a park nearby that gave you a backpack for a hiking adventure. I don't remember the name.

Monmouth has fantastic parks. You can visit their website for a list and activities that go on.

I'm going to try to think of others.

Thanks Sky! Do you, or anyone else, have ideas for local trips within Lakewood (even more exciting playgrounds work)?

I basically know of:
-park by the Lkwd lake, walking trail there
-Ocean County Park (beach, playgrounds, picnic area)
-Brick Reservoir
-Lakewood public library, Barnes and Nobles

This is what I could think of off the top of my head
Lake shanadoah - across from ocean county park, they also have boating
Brookside park (I think that's what it's called) playground, trail, and a creek you can Wade in
Turkey swamp park - also has boating
Manasquan resoivoir - bike trail, boat ride
Atlantic farms - you feed the animals either carrots or corn

Thanks for your list! Where is Brookside Park located? Sounds just right for us. I love day tripes.
