I also thought it was a class on leining, not necessarily for women.
Why shouldn't women learn to lein? If nothing else, they can help their dss practice for their bar mitzvah. AND they can competently evaluate the baal korei based on his abilities to lein and not on his looks, voice quality, speed, or ability to cary a tune.
