He's almost 5. He missed out on a camp bonfire because of the fire (ran away from his group in tears). He smelled smoke today (neighboring bungalow colony must've had a bonfire), he ran inside and hid under his covers because he didn't want to smell the fire.
How should I address this issue?

Yes, it's not within the realm of norm. Has he experienced fire in a way that would cause such a terror? It sounds like a phobia that should be addressed carefully.
