Klal Yisrael lost a true tzaddik and amazing human being today.
Some stories I've heard first-hand:
- A Yid came to the Rebbe to pour out his heart. After he had cried and enumerated all of his tzarros, the Rebbe asked the gabbai to leave the room. The Rebbe then bent down, removed his shoe and withdrew a wad of bills he had stashed away and handed them to the flabbergasted visitor. The Rebbe was a tremendous baal tzeddaka and would give away every penny he had. The gabbaim tried to control the flow of handouts, but the Rebbe creatively bypassed their scrutiny.
- In the early years after the establishment of the Tosh shtetl, the entire village's electricity was hooked up to a single account, paid for by the kehillah. After several months of missed payments, they were informed that the electricity would shortly be cut off. A visitor from NY heard what was about to happen and hurriedly wrote out a check for the entire outstanding balance. He went in to the rebbe and presented him with the check. The Rebbe took the check and asked the chassid, "Are you giving this money to me personally?". When the chassid answered in the affirmative, the Rebbe said to him, "Please give this money to Mr.Ploni, a tzebruchener yid who is in dire straits". When the gabbaim resisted, the Rebbe calmly responded "in Tosh vet zein lekter..."
