if you don't ever uncover and your husband doesn't care?
my hair is shoulder length and there is a bump even if I put my hair un a small pony tail.
my goals are:
no head ache
stable fit, no sliding
natural look, no bumps.

Should I shave, or will a short pixie cut do?

I have shoulder length hair and I don't have a bump or get headaches. If your hair is very thick you might want to just have it thinned out, rather than cut it short. I personally find that when my hair is shorter it is harder to maintain under a shaitel than when it fits nicely into a pony. The way that I put my hair up is like this: I take a small amount at the top and secure in a small bump with a flat clip. This anchors the shaitel to your head so it won't slip. Then I put the rest of my hair in a low pony with a large flat clip that is curved. The clip is put in upside down. I then secure the rest of my hair in a second upside down large flat clip to the back of my head. This way the gathered part is very low to my neck and the tail part is molded to the back of my head. If you still have hair sticking out above your head you can just trim it off.

my problem is that I find it weird and unnecessary to wear two layers of hair on the head. I am miserable in the summer heat and when I need to wear a hat on top of a full sheitel in the winter.

You can try a shave once. It can always grow back.

These threads tend to become a debate on the sources for the chassidish minhag of shaving. So do as you like.

Why are you asking about haircuts if you really would love to get rid of your second layer of hair? Who cares what others think? If you don't care how you might appear in the mirror, and your husband never sees your hair, why not try it once?

A pixie could be a lot of maintenance.
Try a buzzcut, and if you you don't care how you would look, go ahead shave it off, you will not have to worry for 3 months.
