How do you use a timer to make a breast pump go on and off on Shabbos? Doesn't it need the button pushed to start? Help a technologically challenged mother. Thank you!

When I used my pump on Shabbos I turned it on to the max setting and had it go on every 3 hours for 30 min.

I have a hospital grade medela symphony (and a freestyle). Step by step, if you have to press a button to make it start, how does a timer make it turn on?

There's no dial? Only a push button?
Does the button stay on or does it shut off automatically at a point?

As long as the button doesn't automatically turn off, just turn the machine on, then plug it out (while still on) and plug it into a ready set timer the is plugged into the wall.
Make sure you know how to properly set the timer.

Just a button. It doesn't stay on without the plug. Doesn't a timer turn something on as much as plugging it in, but it doesn't act as though button is pushed

The timer turns it on and off, but the button has to be pushed to on for that to work. Try it. Turn it on and set it to go on five minutes from now. It should be off when you start and then turn itself on.
