Actually, the reverse The detector is there in case despite your best efforts CO builds up. (You don't tell kids not to play with matches just in case the smoke detector isn't working! Obviously the goal is to avoid a situation where the detector needs to go off.) It is important for people to get educated about safety protocol, and not just feel complacent because they have a detector -- the detector is just an extra defense to warn you once the situation is already dangerous.

Also please be aware that the sensors in smoke and carbon detectors become less sensitive after a few years, so the actual machine has to be replaced. ( I think every ten years, but I'm not sure)
