I know there is an expiration on car seats after 5 years. IYH I am due right after my oldest turns 5. I will only be needing the carseat for a few months, because afterwards I'll be giving it my other child's bigger carseat.
Is it so bad for me to use the carseat for a few months after expiration?

Not all carseats expire after 5 years, many these days are longer. What model do you have, and what is the manufacture date on it? It doesn't go by when it started to be used, but rather when it was made.
