I've strongly suspected for a few years that my daughter has ADD but compensates (ie has good grades in school).

She just mentioned it herself (how unhappy she is in school because she finds it difficult to impossible to focus and pay attention. . . ) and we would like to pursue it further.

Any one know of a good psychologist in the Northern NJ area?

TIA

Dr. Vaccari at the NYU child study center in Hackensack came highly recommended to us, and we liked her very much. They don't take insurance though.

We also used Dr. Vacarri and we're very impressed.
We did submit it to our insurance and they covered a portion of it.

Okay, just called Dr Vaccari's office. They want $5000 (!!!!) for a "full workup." I said, what if she doesn't need a full workup? So they said I can come in for $500 and they'll talk to me/her and decide what additional tests etc she needs.

This is for an articulate teenager who is doing adequately socially, academically, etc. She does not need a full workup of tests! She is very unhappy in school because she finds it difficult/impossible to focus/pay attention in class and it makes her miserable. This has been going on for years and I've basically ignored it because she does well academically (she is very bright and somehow compensates for spacing out all day) and I figured she'd outgrow it. She's not and I see what she's like in the summer and out of school and. . . I finally decided if I can do something about it (the focusing issue) maybe I should. But that something is NOT spending over $5k.

Aren't there any psychiatrists out there who will talk to her and me for an hour (for like $250) and say if they think it is or isn't ADD and what we should try?!!?

Dr. Mohab Hanna in the Ramsey area. He specializes in ADHD. He is a psychiatrist so he can prescribe medication if necessary.

Thank you. Do you know around what he charges and how many times I'd have to go? I'm NOT looking for an extensive, multi hour very expensive evaluation. Thanks!

I believe Dr. Hanna charges somewhere in the high 300 for an initial appt and then somewhere in the 200 for the follow up
