Considering other communities and need ideas of where to look. Our ideal community would be sincerely Torah observant, affordable, and have resources such as kosher food, tznius clothing, social organizations, schools, shuls, etc. We would like to be within reasonable driving distance to either Cleveland or Baltimore (these are possibilities as well). The community must be warm and welcoming to newcomers.

The community is in the suburbs of Oak Park and Southfield (next to each other). The community is growing and quite large by now and has all the resources of the big Jewish communities. The area is especially known for its cheap housing. I'm sure that there are many Detroit Imamothers that can answer more specific questions.

Cleveland and Baltimore aren't so close - which one is more important to be close to? Honestly, Cleveland and Baltimore sound like great fits based on the what you said you're looking for. If you want something else, options to look into would be Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Detroit, South Bend, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Chicago.

Cincinnati is 7.5-8 hours from Baltimore (it usually takes us 8 with a restroom stop for 5 toilet trained kids plus a gas stop), 4 and some change from Cleveland.

"sincerely Torah observant" -- while everyone is of course on their own level, there is little pretense in observance here, people do the right thing because it's the right thing on a whole

"affordable" -- check. Tuition vouchers, houses in the 100-200K range...

"kosher food" -- check. Though selection is smaller and eating out options are limited. But there is food to be had, glatt kosher, cholov yisroel, pas yisroel...

"tznius clothing" -- this doesn't exist in a store here, but people shop in regular stores to find stuff. There are imported sales every so often (like from Cleveland Wink ) or you can buy online. One thing I wish there was is a Man with the Truck type of shopping, but alas, we survive without it.

"social organizations" -- don't know what that means, but the shuls have social activities

"schools" -- good chinuch for kids through 8th grade, only boys' yeshiva right now is Lubavitch with some talk of making a new high school, excellent girls' high school

"shuls" -- we got those"

The community must be warm and welcoming to newcomers" -- more than welcoming, check out frumcincinnati.com for help they provide.

Cincinnatishuls.com is a great way to see some of the resources we have.

Hi! I live in South Bend, IN it sounds like we could be an amazing option for what your family is looking for and we are only 4 hours from Cleveland and only 10 hours from Baltimore. South Bend is a wonderful, small, Torah valued community, which offers a low cost of living, Private School Vouchers (!), and is a great place to start and raise a family. The best part is we have Mrs. Michall Goldman who works full time to assist families with finding a job so they can realistically make the move. (She also does a lot more but that is her focus). Feel free to e-mail her directly at michallgoldman@gmail.com or 574-261-3051. You can also check out www.cdisouthbend.com for more information including job postings and cost of living information!
