Recommendations are more likely to be relevant if we know what the situation is and what type of therapy is needed.

I think talk therapy would be best here- for 5yr old boy. I am looking for someone who has enough experience so that the exact nature of the situation is not relevant for this post.

it's actually very relevant. I was looking for one for my child and each therapist specializes in one area and would be better for a different situation. so I'm glad I figured that out.

I would be grateful for any recommendations- I don't mind to do my own research once I have some leads.

Thank you!

I don't think therapists provide talk therapy for a 5 yr old. At this young age, therapy is usually provided through a medium such as play, art, animals... Small children don't respond best to sitting on a couch and talking directly for 45 minutes the way adults do so the method used need to take that into account.

I respect your desire not to discuss specifics, but I agree with amother above that it is very relevant when looking for a therapist. Developmental issues would be addressed differently than trauma issues which are addressed differently than social issues or anxiety issues or attachment issues or... and therapists tend to specialize. (If not, they're usually not very good. When it comes to diagnosis, broader is better but for treatment you want a narrower specialty.) Even a broad, general description might make recommendations make more sense and make it less like looking for a needle in a haystack.

OK, I'm convinced! I say talk therapy because I took him to a play therapy session when he was younger and I thought it was a waste of time- he is a mature kid and talks about his feelings.

From the types of issues you mention, it would be more in line with anxiety/trauma issues.

Therapy of any kind *can* be a waste of time. It's dependent on the skill of the therapist, not necessarily the therapy modality.

A word about trauma (if it's not relevant, just ignore): There is trauma and there is child s*xual trauma which, again, is treated differently because of the added component of negative and premature exposure to something that is meant, in the future, to be positive. Proper treatment of child s*xual trauma will involve addressing the s*xual component specifically in addition to the trauma component. A trauma therapist is not enough; treatment for child s*xual trauma requires a CS trauma specialist with expertise in addressing the s*xual component.

Yes, and s-xual trauma with dissociation is different than s-xual trauma without dissociation, and children with the latter need very rare, specialized treatment.

Again, if this is not relevant, please ignore, but for s*xual trauma I wouldn't recommend Dr. Danny Brom for referrals. He refers to some providers who are untrained and non-licensed in mental health or psychological counseling, least of all in child s*xual trauma.
