I saw this in someone's post, and it got me wondering.

I think it's the British way of saying "get pregnant." I don't think it necessarily means by accident but I could be wrong about that.

That's ok. It probably irks our Commonwealth members when we "misspell" words like jewelry, aluminum, and favorite. And they probably blush when we talk about buying our menfolk pants.
I could go on

Me too. I hate the expression. I don't really know why though.
Maybe because of the implied passivity associated with "falling ill", which somehow seems inappropriate to how a baby is made, even if conception wasn't the goal of the act.

Because falling in love is somewhat passive - it often happens out of the blue. It's not something you actively undertake.

I know. I'm just wondering how it can happen that one just happens to get pregnant.

Well, getting pregnant doesn't make sense either, but that's what we say in America to convey that a pregnancy has occurred. In the US and other Commonwealth countries, the term is falling pregnant.

Um.... failed bc? ... not trying, and then "surprise"? thinking you are too old and then finding out you're not?
there are so many ways to "happen" to get pregnant!
I also happen to hate the expression, btw. Or maybe I fall to hate the expression. Same diff.

Of course it does. When you fall, you may GET hurt. When you do a job, you GET paid. Same way, when one has zex they may GET pregnant.

But many people "fall pregnant" in the same way. Just sayin'.

Whatever. I don't really see the difference. This isn't a literal language and a lot of stuff we say- whether British or American- doesn't technically make sense.

YOU don't have to see the difference. I do, and that's why I asked the question. I'm curious, so I asked. Feel free to unfollow this thread if you want. :-)

You know someone who got pregnant out of the blue? Without having zex? It may have been a surprise pregnancy, but I guarantee you there was active zex involved.

Well, there is one rather famous person, supposedly, who I can think of ...

Look, "falling pregnant" is often the next logical step after "falling in love." Perhaps we can invent a term for "falling into birth." And for "falling into your pre-baby weight."
