how do I make a crumb topping for a cake? whenever I make a crumb topping (with margarine) I mix it in the mixer, and it becomes a big ball, and I have to make pieces with this ball, and the cake is not evenly covered with the crumbs. sometimes I take a hand grater and push the "ball" through the holes. I am looking for an easier way.
thank you

Crumbs is the best to mix by hand, some wear gloves, I cant work with gloves so I just scrub my hands well before. The fingers work best.

I actually grate the margarine first, right into the bowl, before I crumb it with the flour using my fingertips.
It makes it so much easier.
Best if the margarine is very cold and firm.

I don't make it with margarine, rather oil:
1/2 cup sugar
2 tbsp flour
2 tsp cinamon
2 tbsp oil
1/2 cup chopped walnuts/ crushed cornflakes, oats
Combine all the ingredients and mix with fingers or a fork.
