I just weaned 19 mo old DD from soy formula. My doctor thinks that all babies that aren't BF need formula. She wanted DD on a hypoallergenic, but considering DD was already 1 and not allergic to soy, doc acquiesced to soy formula (Don't have a choice of doctors and this doctor is excellent besides for her formula belief.) I was giving soy formula until a few days ago. I decided to wean her for various reasons. (Don't want to make this even longer.)

Anyway, I'm want to make sure she is getting all the nutrients she needs. I will try to make an appointment w/ a pediatric nutritionist, but might take several mos. to get an appt. Next time I go to the ped, I plan on mentioning that DD weaned and ask if she needs supplements, but before I do that, I want DD to have a great diet.

She likes most foods, but eats toddler style. I can't predict what she'll eat from one day until the next. She does eat PBJ (natural PB, junky jelly) on WW bread every day for breakfast, but other than that, I never know. She's allergic to milk and can't have dairy products either.

TIA.

She's 19 months old? She hasn't needed formula for the last 7 months. All babies that aren't BF need formula, UNTIL ONE YEAR OLD. (Unless there are extenuating circumstances you didn't mention.)

She doesn't need dairy, really really. Dairy is just a convenient source of protein, calcium, and fat. All of those exist in plenty of other foods too.

Such as... (The point of my thread Very Happy It wasn't meant to be a toddler formula debate.)

All of the calcium sources I can think of are not toddler friendly. I live in Israel and while they did recently start making an almond milk w/ a hechsher I use, I looked at the ingredients and was unimpressed. Full of water, sugar, soy and a tiny bit of almond. I could get Blue Diamond, but that would cost me 25 shekel for a small bottle. Canned salmon also might work, but also hard to find and not very affordable. She wouldn't eat sardines last time I tried. Tehina might be an idea, but overall, she's never been too excited about it (unless maybe it's chocolate chalva).

What about the other vitamins? I worry.

What brand? I saw Neviot+ in the store, but I think it is sweetened. The only other water I could look (not in a big pack) at was Mei Eden and didn't say it has minerals.

I give my milk allergic toddler a fish oil and a coral calcium powder supplement.
I also try to give him as much chicken soup (long cooked for added minerals) as possible. He drinks in the soup in a sippy.
He also does eat sardines and canned salmon which I am lucky he likes.

The point I was making is that you don't need to worry that now that you took her off formula, she's at risk for nutritional deficiencies. Toddlers over 1 don't need formula. This is the standard medical advice nowadays (again, barring extenuating circumstances).

As for the bolded, that pretty much describes the formula she's been drinking. Smile

What about almond butter? Leafy greens blended into a smoothie? Orange juice? Blackstrap molasses? (Come to think of it, you could put all of the above into a smoothie ;-))

Can you get beef bones or chicken bones and make bone broth?

Make sure she gets meat, poultry, eggs and fish. And she should probably take Vitamin D3 drops. She will be ok. Really!

Hi OP, my DS is the same, he also has dairy intolerance, aged 4 now. Our paediatric gastroenterologist (very well-known and reputable here) told us when he was first diagnosed aged 18 months that he should have a daily dose of Vitamin D because it helps a person digest the calcium of other foods better. We actually give him a daily dose of multivitamins which includes the RDA of Vit D.
Other than that I try to give him a balanced diet, and I include proteins that aren't dairy, e.g. fish, meat, etc, as other mothers have recommended above.
The specialist also said that there's no particular reason to give him soy products, as there's no nutritional benefit. He said if he needs a milk-alternative (e.g. for his breakfast), then he'd recommend almond or oat milk. DS likes Oat milk best.
Because he's jealous of his older brother's daily yoghurt pot, I give him a soy yogurt alternative (which the specialist okayed).
I hope that helps!

We drink Mei Eden. It naturally has calcium and minerals. Google about mineral water.

It could be that tap water also has calcium. I dont know.

a fleishigs protein once a day ( can blend and freeze chicken soup with chicken in it) make it a routine food not a whole convo each time... Also don't give a watery soup cuz then u waste time and don't get as much protein and veggies.
U can freeze in small containers and send along or take along when u go out.
Hamburgers chicken etc.
Fish
Guacamole can stand in for a yogurt and is very nutritious.

It's not that hard once u stop looking to replace dairy with fake versions, rather with different things all together

He can eat fleishig even when u guys have milchigs

Read this just as DD was eating leftover chicken soup. Made me feel Smile although, she doesn't get most of the broth b/c she has to feed herself or she won't eat. It's hard for her to get broth on the spoon.

You're right. (One of the reasons I took her off was b/c I didn't want her having so much soy and wasn't about to pay a boatload of money for a hypoallergenic formula for a toddler that happily eats (as long as she's not in a mood). The problem is that she doesn't have the most amazing diet, formula gave me reassurance that at least she's getting the fats and vitamins and minerals necessary,

Don't know if they sell almond butter here. Could give my health food store a check. Don't have a blender for smoothies. Could make OJ in my blender. Do oranges have calcium? I thought it was just added into Tropicana or whatever brand. I have blackstrap molasses. She likes it Smile. Was putting it into oatmeal, but stopped recently. Can get back into it. It is very sugary though, so she only can get so much of it.

Don't know if I can get bones. I can use chicken necks and wings. Meat bones, doubt I could get.

Thanks! I have Vit D in my house. Haven't used it in awhile, guess I should check if it expired. I wish milk alternatives would be cheaper here.

Thanks for the ideas! She's at the stage where she only wants to eat what we eat. We try not to eat milchigs around her b/c she'll beg. We have to eat it when she's not around.

is she ok with goat or sheep milk products? my dd can't have cow's milk but is fine with goat. we make goat grilled cheese for her, milk goat's cheese into pasta, eggs, etc. she loves soup, eats greens pretty well, and is an overall good eater. don't avoid giving your dd nutritious stuff because she won't eat it. put it on her plate and let her see it. let her see you and your dh eating it. she'll try it eventually.

re: bones for bone broth, you can save the bones from chicken or meat that you cook. put them in the soup and add a little bit of vinegar, it supposedly leeches calcium from the bones.

do you have a crock pot? my dd's newest breakfast favorite is burger soup. I make it in the crock pot the night before. chicken soup in the crockpot isn't so great, but meat soup is. nothing wrong with fleishigs for breakfast, especially if you don't eat milchigs. she likes it as a snack after school as well.

Never tried giving her a straw. She really might. Sounds right up her alley. Good idea (in general w/ liquids too).

She has a milk protein allergy. Before she had her "official" diagnoses, I did once try a goat yogurt and IIRC she reacted (think it was less severe, but still reacted). She was never officially tested for goat milk allergy, but since I think she reacted, not going to take a chance.

Thanks for the bones advice. We don't have a crockpot, but I am thinking of getting one, not just for this. I was off of milchigs myself when I BFed her and when you can't have milchigs anyway, a fleishig breakfast or lunch is great!

My ds does drink his soup with a straw or with a straw sippy cup. I just monitor how long he has it until I wash it. He does use a spoon/straw from a bowl sometimes, but it usually does get spillled LOL Does your dd use a sippy cup?
DS tested negative for goats milk allergy but the products are hard to find or super expensive.
Do you have a blender? You said you didnt have one for smoothies but have one for orange juice? If you can get coconut flakes, you can easily and cheaply make coconut milk. Almond milk is much more expensive to make.
