Recently acquired a fire tablet for use with kids/work. I used to use an iPad but would like to transition the kid/work stuff to the fire (cheaper and has expandable memory. And I like my iPad for personal use and the point here is to separate the work and personal, so if I have to choose one it's the iPad for me and the fire for work.) Looking for app recommendations. for now I'd like to stick with free ones but if you have one that you think is worth its price I'm interested in knowing about it for future reference.

I did a little browsing in the appstore but I'm not finding it as intuitive to browse as Apple's. Or maybe I'm just missing something. But I think what I need are suggestions from people who already took the time to do that.

Looking for apps suitable for preschool through primary grades/ages 3-6. Would love to have something for:
Phonics
Letter formation/tracing
Visual discrimination (find the differences, matching, etc. I just downloaded a great iPad app called b-d bake off for sorting similar-looking letters, I would love to have an equivalent on fire but I don't think that particular one is available)
Math - something to build concepts visually, like the kind of app where you can move around pictures to show addition/subtraction.
Social/emotional skills - yoga for kids, emotional awareness, anything really.

And is there something that lets you download youtube videos onto the kindle fire? I have something like that for the iPad and it's handy.

We're a big fire family. I really like a lot of the apps put out by pbskids. They aren't free, but they're high quality apps with no in-app purchases. The only app I'm finding right now that my kids play with frequently that is currently free is the Tumble Leaf one (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KI2R68O?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_d_detailpage_o01_). We managed to get a lot as free apps of the day, which amazon is no longer doing. However, they do have their new underground program, but the apps don't work on my kids kindles. I know that they have some of the Super Why (pbs) apps that my kids like there.

I understand wanting free apps, but in my experince, a lot of them are free because they want you to make in app purchases. I find it's worth it to pay for them because it's less frustrating, and even if you do buy the additional parts (which negates finding a free app, anyway), it doesn't work in free time.

seeker, check out amazon underground. it provides a lot of normally paid-for apps for free (there are ads, but not too many). you may find familiar apps there for free.

I get that Amazon Underground offers a lot of free apps including the in-app purchases, but I'm having a hard time searching within their appstore. Maybe I just don't get it yet. I found a couple of things that look promising but other than filtering through every single thing they have, which is an impossible waste of time, I'm not sure how to find anything.

Theres a way to put the google play store on a kindle, has more apps.
I did it and can look to see if I have the instructions if you're interested.

I prefer looking at apps on my computer to using the kindle, because especially in underground the search really is a pain.

We got lots of Kindle Fire apps when Amazon was still doing their free app of the day but I have also found Underground to be not user friendly so we haven't gotten anything new in that long. I just wanted to recommend the Dragonbox Numbers app which is based on Cuisinaire rods: http://www.amazon.com/WeWantTo.....mbers .

We don't have the app, mainly because the folks at Dragonbox were stubborn and insisted on coloring their rods differently than C-rods and I don't want my little kids getting confused, but we have other Dragonbox apps and they are excellent. It's pricey though.

Here are some of my younger kids' favorites:
