My parents live a 5-6 hour flight away; we go to them every 18-24 months. We try to stay at least 5-6 days when we go to them. If we went out for a family simcha within a couple of months of Sukkos or Pesach, we'll skip going to them for yomtov until the next year.
My in-laws live an 8-9 drive away; we go to them for almost every Sukkos & Pesach, plus sometimes a long weekend over midwinter vacation or summer break, so about 3-4 times a year.
