upon looking up fast times on my zmanim ... it says next to fast starts at dawn

Eating of a settled character - אכילת קבע - may not be started
during the half hour immediately preceding dawn.

so how does the fast start at dawn ?! what about those that wake up to eat ? what exactly is considered 'a settled character' ?!

thank you , I read that too, and wondered the same thing as my sons were planning on getting up to eat breakfast at 5am...
I would be so happy if somebody could please explain that to us...

Go to yutotah

Search ten minute halacha lebowitz

I think the topic is called taanis Esther

He explains it concisely and clearly

(he has more than 5,000 shiurim on yutorah alone)

so it's planning the night before that you will wake up early to eat ... & also not eating withing 30 minutes before davening - apparently people do this before mincha too having nothing to do with fasting

also in case you sit down for a whole meal you might lose track of time and eat into the beginning of the fast although some are maikel because of course you won't forget it's a fast since that is why you woke up early to begin with
