My in laws came to visit us from Israel. We are in the USA on the East Coast. According to them, people in Israel buy fresh garlic with leaves and purple skins attached because the kind with white peels come from China because they are sprinkled with flour. I have been looking all over for garlic with leaves here but have not found any. Is using fresh garlic with white skins a problem on Pesach? Thanks so much for your help.

The most common types of garlic sold in U.S. supermarkets grow that way... white... never heard of sprinkling garlic with flour. Rolling Eyes
Some varieties have Purple skin.

If I'm not mistaken the issue is that the garlic from China has dried skins, which *may* be dried using a chometz soaking solution. I have no idea what's factually correct. I just know some people in Israel buy fresh local garlic for Pesach, for that reason.

My husband's family doesn't use garlic because years ago it grew in the same fields as the wheat.
It doesn't apply anymore today but they still keep the minhag.

Haha, yeah. I thought that might be part of it. I just remember a bunch of years ago, a whole controversy about whether it was okay to use the China garlic on Pesach. So I figured there might be some connection. (Maybe the Israeli garlic growers' association started the whole rumor about chometz in the dried garlic? Kiddding...)

Are there any farmers' markets near you? You can buy them fresh from the farm and ask about what their practices are.
