We did it all the time as children, even at younger ages. It's very nice to sleep outside where it's cool especially after a very hot day.
What do you think camping is?
For your comfort, have him sleep on the side that faces your bedroom window.
Are you concerned about nocturnal visitors of unpreferred influence?

Is your neighborhood that dangerous that you feel a predator will be looking in backyards after dark for children to molest? The chances of this happening are almost nil. Most children who experience s-exual abuse are the victims of relatives, family friends or trusted adults in the community.
Small adventures like this part of growing up. Give the boy some independence.

Camping is usually done under adult supervision (I hope!)
I don't live in Monsey so I can't envision OP'S backyard.
The way my backyard is set up- I wouldn't allow it.
Firstly, we've had many unwelcome visitors over the years including raccoons etc.
Secondly, it's very easy for anyone to access it even though it's gated. Even my 5 year old can climb over the gate.
I live in a relatively safe neighborhood but there are many crazies out there...
