Im wondering what the difference is between the meaning of these 2 names.
I know Yair was the father of Mordechai and Meir was the name of one of Rabbi Akiva's greatest talmidim. So they both have biblical background.
But why choose one over the other? Is there a difference in meaning? Thank you.

Meir - light in the present, Yair - light in the future.
I like the meaning of Meir more, because the child's presence is already lighting up the world for example, and not like Yair - someday in the future, though I like the sound of Yair better, and it is a bit more modern, or Israeli.

The first Yair in tanach was the son of Menashe - a warrior who conquered lands in the Gilad during the conquest of the eastern bank of the Jordan, as elaborated in Sefer Bamidbar.
Another Yair - Yair Hagiladi, was a shofet during the period of the shoftim.
The third Yair, as OP noted, was the father of Mordechai.
Meir is a Tannaitic, not a biblical name. Many sages and important rabbis with the name, starting with the famous R' Meir as OP noted.
Both are beautiful names. AFAIK the difference in meaning is only in the tense of the verb.
Yair is perceived as more 'modern' as blossoming noted. Meir is more 'old world'.
