By combo you mean both in one? I wouldn't think that would work.... The sound machine would block out the baby's cries.... They should be on opposite sides of the room.
I don't have a monitor to recommend (don't love the one I have) but I have a sound machine that has fan and white noise sounds. Its called Lectro fan and I've been very happy with it. We didn't like the other popular fan motor one cause it didn't get loud enough to block out our outside noises.
