I heard a speech from a rabbi over pesach that blew my mind. Crystal clear and answered so many of my hashkafa questions that have weighed on me for years.

Is it appropriate for me to call and ask him if I could pay for an hour a week or a month to ask him more questions? I really want to understand more of his perspective but I'm feeling insecure about asking him this.

I have no idea what is normal for this particular person but why not just ask, if he says no you've lost nothing.

I would connect with him and tell him that you learned a lot from his shiur.
Then I would ask if he gives other shiurim discussing your issues of interest that you could attend. Depending on how he answers, you will know where to go from there.

Thank you. I live very far away so I can't attend more classes. I guess I'll give it a try. I was just wondering if it's appropriate.

Yes, I think offering payment is inappropriate.

Call and ask if he has recorded shiurim on this topic as you have questions and gained clarity from listening to him. Perhaps that will be an opening to ask if you can speak with him periodically to gain more clarity on this topic. But maybe he has done a whole series that you can download.

Offering to pay for ongoing private classes is inappropriate? Are rabbis supposed to give up hours for free? I'm not in his congregation and contributing to his paycheck, so that was my thought.

Thanks.

I don't know if he'd be comfortable with ongoing private classes with a woman even if she were in his congregation. A group, possibly, or maybe even probably.

I think it's completely appropriate to offer to pay for private classes in his office as long as you are not somewhere inappropriate

why not reach out to him and ask if it would be ok to be an associate member of his shul so that you can ask him your questions without feeling like a burden to him as a non member? Even with offering payment he may not have time to talk with you an hour a week to go over questions bc he simply may be too busy.

My rabbi just started a forum pessach time for ask the rabbi questions and he is continuing it now throughout the year. Its a great way to ask non urgent halachic questions without having to meet in person/track him down. He is a very busy Rabbi and has a large congregation so this is a great way to get answers to questions.

Heidi, it would be on the phone since I live far away.

Cfriedman, what a great idea. Is it a forum like this one?
