my baby was in NYU NICU couple of months ago. we b"H had a good experience (he was there only couple of days for minor complication).
in a conversation with a friend today she was telling me that so & so has a preemie in Maimonides and even though they don't live nearby they are traveling here because they have a great hospital as opposed to NYU which has a horrible NICU...
why is this bothering me hours later????

That would bother me too, because the NICU in NYU is amazing and has a much better name than Maimonides.

Consider her clueless. If it still bothers you then tell her nicely that you had a great experience there.

As a mother, you want to do the best for your baby, and along comes this person telling you that you didn't. Luckily, it's nonsense, and you know it because your baby is fine.

For all you know, she's saying Maimonides is better because she trusted her child to them and needs to convince herself that it's the best. Don't let her insecurity make you insecure.

It's understandable. You feel like she's questioning your judgment, especially about something as important as your baby's health.
It's like l'havdil you tell her you bought an amazing outfit at X store and her response is that she'd never go in there.

You feel bad because she seems to be saying you didn't do what's best for your baby.

Ironically, what she said is ridiculous. NYU is a much better hospital on all accounts (including the NICU) than Maimonides. Maimonides doesn't even come CLOSE.

BH your baby was only there a short time and is healthy. Just let the comment go.

Seriously? I might get offended by her comment if what she said even made sense, but since Maimonides is the dinkiest hospital and I wouldn't even use the ER there, I would just laugh her off.

Ironically, you just did to me (and I'm sure others) what ops friend did to her. NYU is definitely a great hospital, but Maimonides is definitely not the "dinkiest". For some things it is actually the top, like for heart related issues. Just saying.

First, you can relax. She has no idea what she's talking about. NYU's nicu is much, much better than Maimonides'.

Secondly, your child is doing well and that's what counts.

I delivered my first by surprise early in a hospital that is okay, but not the tops and my child had short to long term issues. However, I kept him in the hospital because I felt that they were doing a good job with his care, he was doing well and improving daily, and there was no point moving him unless there were complications that another hospital could handle better. So I would have been very hurt by the comment this person made to you as well. But you definitely don't need to be. Your kid was in a top hospital.

I guess they're lucky that they have one department that they can boast about...but as for all the rest they are so bad that the hospital cannot sustain itself.
Long Island Jewish is taking them over.

Whatever, totally not the point of this post....

1)LIJ wants to buy them out, it is not confirmed.

2) like I said, they may not be a top teaching hospital, but they are fairly competent in normal situations

3) it is the point of this post because you are making me feel defensive about the care of my children, just like ops friend did to her.

Interestingly enough, this week I saw two specialists in a certain specialty, one in NYU and one in maimonedes for a very serious medical condition my baby is experiencing. After thorough research, we were told by many to STAY AWAY from the nyu doctor, and by many to go with the maimonedes doctor. We had scheduled surgery in maimonedes. What you are telling me is that maimonedes is such a horribel hospital that I am entrusting my babies life to idiots and I am a horrible parent. Thanks for that.

Thank you for your kind words. Don't worry, I am totally not concerned by her words, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of her comments. As is, we cancelled the surgery in Maimonides for now, as we are trying to get in with a top doctor elsewhere. I was just making a point.

I hear that. As much as it's water under the bridge, it can still rankle. I had a baby in the Winthrop NICU, which is also known to be an excellent NICU. My mom commented that all the doctors were foreigners and what's with that. I shot back that if anything, it shows we have a problem with education here in America, that American kids are apparently not bright enough to be neonatologists.

Actually maimonidies has an excellent top rated Nicu, and there cardiology & geriatric departments are known to be also top rate.
That doesn't mean to say that the nicu in NYU is not as good. Many hospitals have great nicu, mount Sinai, Columbia.... this doesn't mean that the others r no good.

Maimonides does not have a top rated NICU. Anyone that knows in advance that they're having a baby that need a NICU makes arrangements to give birth elsewhere. I know people that have switched doctors and hospitals mid pregnancy precisely for this.

People assume that their nicu is not great because they're hospital isn't that great. Some high risk ladies use them slecifically for their Nicu.

I find that interesting because AFAIK there aren't even any high risk doctors that deliver there. (I've done my research- unless something has changed in the past year...or I may have missed someone when researching)
Do you know of any?

In line with this and your other posts, just wanted to say that maybe next time get educated about the healthcare industry before putting out random facts. For starters, many large hospitals are joining or being bought out by other healthcare systems, purely for ECONOMICAL reasons Rolling Eyes ...In today's economy, it is very difficult for a single hospital to stay afloat. Take a look at what happened to LICH...
Secondly, Maimonides does have many areas that they excel in. Additionally, although I don't think their NICU is top ranked, they actually have one of the highest numbers of deliveries yearly in the NY area.
