I am freaking out.

My son was tested last year for precocious puberty (he's 8 and 1\2 now) on his pediatricians recommendation. the tests were inconclusive and we decided to reevaluate in a year. yesterday I was checking him for ticks after a outting and I found a few public hairs. Is this normal?

I have scheduled a followup with the endocronologist in a few weeks but I'm freaking out now.

when did your boys begin to develop?

advice please... I feel so alone. I know there are no other boys in his class that are close to this point.

It does seem like it's a bit early. Call your pediatrician.

it was right before he took a bath. He was naked and about to go in the tub. I always check my kids for ticks right before the tub if they have been out in the woods behind our house. I've already pulled off a few ticks. I was checking by his belly button and looked down and saw it!

Well, hes only 8, and kids at that age may still get baths.

I apologize for being off topic and wish you luck figuring out what to do.
But...I could not imagine checking my sons stomach in a way that his private parts are just sitting there exposed! And I am by no means a prude.
It's more about him than me! To help him learn whats acceptable/ appropriate.
He can have his underwear one...etc.

Why?

I remember getting baths when I was 8.

I like to transition kids to showers in third grade. Many kids are already 8 in second grade.

When you give a kid a bath, you see his whole body.

Op- I'm sorry I cant be more helpful as I only have girls but I just want to apologize for the thread here. clearly you are seeing help and wisdom for a issue that has upset you and noone has thought to give you practical advise. all they do is debate baths for a 8 year old!

you deserve better :hugs:

Seriously? My kids run around the house stark naked all the time. I have to beg them to put on clothes

To continue the tangent... Wink Ticks often hang out in bodily folds, including armpits and pubic areas. So yes, when I check my son for ticks, that includes his private parts - he can't see them all that well himself. As he gets older I will teach him to do it with a mirror, but now he's not old enough to be trusted to check thoroughly.

OP, that sounds difficult, but you're obviously on top of the situation. Consult your endocrinologist. Good luck!

Both my stepsons were getting pubes at about 8 or nine. Their father said that he was about that age when he got his.

ETA: To add to the controversy I would not be bathing boys that old. I stopped at 5.

She was given practical advice. the other posters have nothing to add to that. She needs to speak to the endo. If a poster had experience in that area, they would post their advice, obviously.

Well obviously, better that your child get an infected tick bite or Lyme disease than that you dare see him undressed at 8 years old. Rolling Eyes way to lose all sense of perspective.

Op, hope you get some answers soon. Checking for ticks is an important health measure in many areas of the US and Canada these days, so good for you for being careful.

Thats obviously extremely young for a boy to be getting pubic hair. (As far as I know, girls hit puberty earlier than boys do, and even for a girl thats extremely early)

Anyway...You let a 5 year old wash himself? Why? How can you trust that hes washing himself well?

I don't know much about puberty in boys but I'm seeing it much earlier in girls. I'm not an endocrinologist or a specialist in this area by any stretch of the imagination but I do work in medicine and I'm seeing girls having their periods at 8 so I imagine it's not all that uncommon for him to have a few pubic hairs.

To add to the controversy I also think it's weird to be seeing your 8 year old stark naked like that (obviously different if he was complaining of pain down there). I know I'd never have let my mother bathe me at 8. I don't think I necessarily washed as well as she would but no way was she seeing me naked!

Puberty is definitely starting earlier and earlier. It's documented in medical and psychology books.

I can't believe how quickly this thread derailed.

She's his MOTHER, and she's checking her 8-yo son for TICKS to prevent a DISEASE, and you all immediately fixate on the fact that she saw her own son's privates.

What is the issue here?

- Do you think she is molesting him?
- Do you think he won't understand the difference between being naked for a medical check in front of his mother before a bath vs. streaking through the streets?

The hysteria here is absurd.

My brother and I both got the first underarm hairs at age 10. I got my first period at age 13. Is it so early?
