I don't know much about puberty in boys but I'm seeing it much earlier in girls. I'm not an endocrinologist or a specialist in this area by any stretch of the imagination but I do work in medicine and I'm seeing girls having their periods at 8 so I imagine it's not all that uncommon for him to have a few pubic hairs.

To add to the controversy I also think it's weird to be seeing your 8 year old stark naked like that (obviously different if he was complaining of pain down there). I know I'd never have let my mother bathe me at 8. I don't think I necessarily washed as well as she would but no way was she seeing me naked!

For all those saying they'd never allow their moms to bathe them. Girls and boys are worlds apart! Boys don't have the same embarrassment issues. My 9 year old son has trouble with executive functioning and begs me to help him, especially to check that his hair is free of shampoo.

You need to respect your child's feelings and privacy according to his wishes, however I am his mom after all, and if that's what he wants, is it so perverted?!? Come on.

I'll also add that as a Lyme disease sufferer I applaud OP for protecting her children and doing what she feels is necessary.

To conclude, as a mother of boys I agree that 8.5 is slightly young. IIRC DS's hair started growing at 9.5 and even that I thought was somewhat young.

Good luck with the endocrinology appointment. Hug
