Hi! So, I didn't grow up eating chulent but like making it now for my family. I usually follow Jamie Geller's recipe and it's great. But I know there are many variations. Do you have a secret ingredient that makes your chulent the best? A special type of meat? Thanks for sharing! Good Shabbos!!!

PS this is the one I use as a base, though I deviate a bit here and there to customize it a little:

It's really salty so you really don't need to add any salt to the cholent.

A whole bulb of garlic wrapped in aluminum foil -- after cooking long and slow, the flavor mellows and it melts to a spreadable consistency. Cholent garlic spread on challah = mmmmmmmm.....

I always put in ketchup.
You could try duck sauce instead of honey.
Spices: sea salt and/or celery salt
Pepper
Paprika
Cumin

We also like eggs in our Cholent! Wash the shells and put them in raw. They're a little hot to peel, but yummy.

Love your ideas.

Funny, I have had the eggs in chulent in Israel but never made it myself for some reason. I will have to just take the plunge and try it.

Love the whole bulb of garlic idea!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, ladies!

I also put in lots of vegetables. Onion, potato, sweet potato, carrot, butternut squash and parsnip. And a few cloves of garlic.

I remember in seminary a girl told us that when her father was in camp as a boy, he and a friend tried a prank and spilled a jar of pickle juice into the camp chulent. That Shabbos everyone was raving about how good it was! And since then he makes the chulent and puts in pickle juice.

I have never tried this myself....

That's funny!

I bet the vinegary, garlicky flavor was good. The vinegar may have tenderize the meat. Cool!!

I am wondering how that would even taste good but I guess people make pot brownies which are supposedly a hit.

My cholent is really delicious if I may say so myself!
I put my cholent in the crock pot in the following order and don't mix it. Somehow the layers make it come out great.

Beans
Cheek Meat
Potatoes
Barley
Onion chopped
Onion soup mix
Dark brown sugar
Water to cover
Keep crockpot on low
