They were sheitels in the shtetels in Europe. Obviously that's not as far back as the Imahos, but sheitels are not a "new American" invention.

Iirc, the gemarah also makes references to sheitels -- pe'ah nochris.

One taken aback family member told me that if sheitels were good enough for r' Moshe's wife, they were good enough for her and certainly good enough for me. My response was that the sheitels they had back then we're nothing comparable to the super natural looking, gorgeous sheitels of today, and that if she would switch to a synthetic sheitel styled like rebitzen feinstein's, I would consider it too. That got her off my back real quick.

If you are not forbidden to wear a sheitel, go for it.
Sheitels are mentionned in the gmara.
I don't get the American connexion. But I never do.

I also don't feel that today's shaitels are very Tznius.
They are long, luscious and streaked and are prettier than any hair I've seen. They are just very glamorous. This is just my feeling.
However it is the only way I cover my hair, and so does everyone else in my family.
I don't know if I'd be able to cover my hair with only hats or scarves.

she has tons of pretty styles...with tichels you need to change a lot.its not like a shaitel where one style all the time is enough. you need change and depending on your mood and occasion...when you find them at low prices its fun too
