We want an upright. I don't see any great sales that end today so I have a little time.
Are there any Shabbos issues I need to be aware about? Any recommendations anyone has? Thanks!

Make sure that you know whether it's manual or automatic defrost.

WelI I guess you only need to know if it actually makes a difference to you.
I knew that I specifically wanted automatic .
Manual is a hassle and makes a mess.

Frost free means there's no ice on the shelves. I have a frost free one and love it. The theory used to be that the ones with ice don't leave freezer burn. But today these things are much more advanced. My frost free doesn't give the food any freezer burn.

I owned an upright for years and we are now looking for a replacement. We decided to go with a chest freezer instead. It's cheaper and more efficient to run and the food can be kept frozen for longer. The only problem is access (digging around to find what you want) but we plan to use it for storage of meats/etc that are not easily available here (we live in a small town). I know that's not what you were asking but just thought I'd throw out some of the advantages of a chest freezer while we're at it.

That's a thought. But I don't think we can give up the space.

Mine shows the temperature in a digital display on the outside which I love, and it has an alarm if the door is open too long or the temperature gets too high.
I don't know what the specific shabbat issues are aside from the lights and the display, but mine has a sabbath mode which we enable every Friday afternoon.
