We recently moved to a new house. My daughters (age 9,10 and 4) share a room. The room is a decent size but kind of bare. They have a bunk bed with a trundle, and each of them has a chest of drawers. Nothing up on the walls yet. They are not great at keeping their room neat. Example, clean clothes often dumped on top of dressers instead of being put in drawers, school supplies and papers all over the place. They just left for camp and I cleaned it top to bottom and want it to stay that way!

I think a little decorating might motivate them. I'm thinking of getting a desk but I don't want another clutter magnet.

Suggestions?

I love using wall decals since they are cheap, easy, and since they are inexpensive can be updated as your girls get older. I found some nice ones on e-bay and amazon for only a few dollars each. If ordering from there just be aware that it can take awhile to come as the cheap ones ship direct from China. If you want it faster you can look in target and other such stores. Maybe a pretty clothes hamper as well, instead of a plain plastic one.

while the decorating might be a good idea ... a clothes/laundry basket for clothing & a small decorative box for everything else would more efficiently help them put everything into one place that each of them can keep their own as messy or clean so long as it stays inside

Not OP but I've been thinking abt getting those. My question is - do they really not take off paint off the wall? Are they ok for all walls? Are they like stickers?

IKEA has lots of inexpensive, colorful, and practical organizers, laundry bins, etc. which double as decorative elements.

Also, you can paint their walls a nice colorful shade to help spruce up the room without taking up any floor space.

Nice bedding can also serve as a decor element.

you can get big wooden abc's according to initials of your girls names and paint/decorate to match the room and hang on wall.

You can also create your own bulletin board matching to the room. take regular board, cover with layer of stuffing and put fabric on top. Then do a crisscross with rubbers on top (glued to the back). It's a fun place for girls to put pictures, memos without having clutter all over.

What's the best way to hang things on walls without making permanent holes or ruining paint?

First of all browse pinterest for ideas!!!

Match everything to the linen! Get a matching rug! If the room is big enough get matching bean bags/ mushroom chairs/ make a tire chair http://grillo-designs.com/kids-tyre-seating/(they are great cause you can store stuff in them)

If you go for a desk hang a bulletin board, a dry erase board, a picture board, and three clipboards. Put mason jars (or tasters choice coffee jars;) at the edge for school supplies (one for scissors, one for crayons, one for markers, one for pencils, one for pens...)

If you are crafty you can make them all yourself with picture frames painted to match the linen.
For bulletin board just paint the frame to match, For dry erase but a pretty piece of scrapbook paper in the picture frame (behind the glass), picture board can be same as dry erase( diff scrapbook page) with crisscrossed ribbons to stick pics into. Clip boards can be modge -podged with napkins to make them pretty/ can decorate each one with your girls name.

This way all flying papers homework papers can go in the clipboards, all other papers on the bulletin boards, and you can write a to do list(with a clean up routine Wink) on the dry erase board.

Get pretty laundry baskets and pretty hooks so that dirty laundry goes in the baskets and bags/ clothes/ towels go on hooks. If you have closet doors the hooks can go inside the closet doors so it looks neater.

Do some wall art- like these above the dresser

Byisrael thanks, great suggestions!

I did the wall stickers as some posters suggested. It was a fun project and perked up the room a lot!

The desk with bulletin boards/dry erase is a good idea, I think they'll enjoy that.
