More than the poll allows. But does it really matter? I feel like this topic will just breed jealousy.

I wonder what's up with this compelling interest in the finances of other people? It's pretty much continual here and obviously distressing to some.

Yes I'm gonna be honest and I'm jealous. But on second thought I am happy for all of you I know that I have something you might not. So everyone gets good stuff. Some at their wedding some later. I just don't see the need for such threads. What's the point?

I really don't remember since that was more than 10 years ago. Even if I did remember it's none of your or anyone elses business.

DH and I definitely each brought in more of our personal money than we "made" in gifts.

I agree with you. I got under 3000 shekel but that's not what matters.I know someone that just married into a very wealthy family and was divorced after a month.

We received somewhere near the 3,000 mark and thought it was very much. Over ten years ago. I have to admit, when I go to weddings for the meal I don't always give a check. I usually gave an engagement gift and am making a sheva bruchos. Combined with life's other expenses, it didn't make it into my budget.

Around 13,000. Both mine and my husband's parents struggle to make a living and neither side has rich friends. We had around 150 couples at our wedding and almost all of them gave $100 each. We got very few gifts other than money. There were a few who gave less than 100 and a handful who gave around 300 (mostly close relatives).

We lived off that money when we first got married and it was gone very quickly.

We received around 15-20,000 in wedding money, I forget exactly how much. Got married in 2009, and the wedding had around 350 people. More than 85% of the money came from DH's side, as he has a large family and his parents are widely respected community figures who run in a number of different circles. (Also, although my family lives OOT, we had the wedding in-town and all of DH's side was present, while much of my parents' community did not come--while they were missed, it had a major financial upside! DH's people gave far more than my home community ever would have.)

We spent a few thousand on furniture and finishing up essentials from the registries that went unbought, and then tenaciously saved the rest. B"H that mid-2009 was an excellent time to invest in the stock market! The money is still sitting and there will be more than enough to spend it on in the coming decade, like a house or kids' simchas.

I got married 3 years ago. I got almost nothing, maybe a total of $800. One check for $100 bounced and we didn't even know who it was from...!!!!!!! instead of getting $100, We lost $25 in bank fees!

My parents are ba'alei teshuvah and have many relatives, friends, and long-time collegues who are not frum or who are also ba'alei teshuvah. Many are successful professionals who do not go to nearly as many weddings as the average frum person. Because of that, many gave us large checks ($200-$500), which amounted to about 20K. I was actually shocked that so many people gave that much.
