Did you explain the details of the situation to the school, or did you just fill out an online application that may not have conveyed the specifics of your arrangement? Given your arrangement, which I think is understandable and responsible, it doesn't make sense to me that your step-children's school should deny tuition assistance based on money you put into a retirement fund for your children from a previous marriage.
